Real Name: Chris Irvine Nickname: Y2J, Chris Jericho Birthdate: 11/9/70 Height: 6' 0" Weight: 225 lbs Signature Moves: Walls Of Jericho
Biography:
Chris Irvine was born in New York City on November 9, 1970. His father was Ted Irvine who played for the Rangers in the NHL at the time. In the off-season his family would move back to Winnipeg. Chris lived in various cities throughout his dad's career but Winnipeg was home. Chris went to school in Winnipeg and earned a degree in journalism after going to Red River Community College.
He got into wrestling from watching WWF and Stampede Wrestling. Chris also used to set up rings for promoter Bob Holliday while still living in Winnipeg. After finishing college he decided wrestling was what he wanted to do. He moved to Calgary to enter Stu Hart's school (a.k.a "The Dungeon") when he was nineteen. He went there everyday for about three months. After that he was on his own.
Once on his own Chris worked his first pro match on October 2, 1990, against a young man named Lance Storm. It was also Storm's first match. He worked independents around Calgary for a while, that was when a promoter told him he needed a name. So he came up with Jericho. From the Bible and also because he had an album called "Walls of Jericho" he thought it would be a neat name.
In 1992 Chris got a chance to work for a smaller company in Mexico which led the way to the EMLL which was a bigger Mexican company. He worked there for two years. From there Chris got the opportunity to go work for a company in Japan called WAR. He worked there for two years as well. That was the time when he had to come up with the name Lion Heart. While working in Mexico and Japan he had to come up with another name because they couldn't pronounce Jericho. So he came up with Lion Heart because most of the other wrestlers in Japan had animal names.
While still in Japan Chris met up with Chris Benoit. Benoit helped Chris get into ECW where he made his debut in February of 1996. Benoit was working there at the time. Then Benoit went onto WCW, he put in a good word for Chris there too. But then Chris met a guy doing independant shows in L.A. Chris kept calling and calling the guy. He was one of the guys putting together a show in L.A. That's where Chris met Eric Biscoff. Chris gave him a call and it was a done deal. He debuted in WCW September of 1996. Afterwards he became a WCW cruiserweight champ on five occasions and also winning the T.V. title on one occasion.
Chris was enducted into the Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997.
In August of 1999 Chris Jericho made his much awaited WWF debut. He was billed as the "New Millennium" of the World Wrestling Federation, and any Jerichoholic would tell you that he is exactly that: The future. He went on to capture the Intercontinental and European Championships during his first year in the 'Fed. and is now on the verge of main-eventing PPV shows.
On July, 30, 2000 Chris Irvine and girlfriend of two years, Jessica Lockheart, were married.
October 2, 2000 marks the 10 year anniversary for Chris Jericho in pro wrestling. From humble beginings in the Hart family Dungeon, to the top of the World Wrestling Federation.
Jericho won the Intercontinental Championship on four occasions, the Tag Team Championship twice, and the European and Hardcore titles as well. An impressive resume to be sure, but after coming in with such a bang, some critics suggested that his first two years with the company had been a disappointment because he didn't win the WWF Championship. Before coming to WWF, Jericho had four unquestionably disappointing years in WCW, so some doubters suggested that Jericho lacked the size necessary to ever make it to the top. It certainly couldn't have been a lack of charisma or athletic ability - Jericho has those to spare.
Finally, in late 2001, Jericho forced all his doubters to, as he would say, "shut the hell up." He "won the big one," defeating The Rock at October's No Mercy Pay-Per-View to capture the WCW Championship. Then, in December at Vengeance, he became the only man to defeat The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin in the same night, and thus became the Undisputed WWF Champion.
That night, Dec. 9 in San Diego, Calif., he also became the only superstar to have held five different WWF titles.
His detractors can never again say that Y2J won't make it to the top. In 2001, Chris Jericho proved them all wrong when he became the first-ever Undisputed WWF Champion.
He says he is your new hero. He is your party host, the Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah. He is Y2J, Chris Jericho, and he claims he is here to save the World Wrestling Federation.
Born in New York City (where his father played NHL hockey for the New York Rangers)and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jericho knew at an early age that he wanted to be a pro
wrestler. He travelled to Calgary, Alberta shortly after college (where he earned a journalism degree) and trained with the Hart family, and before long he was turning heads in rings across the Canadian midwest. For two years he worked primarily on the Canadian indy circuit, and captured the Canadian heavyweight title along the way. He then headed to Mexico's EMLL promotion in April 1993. For the remainder of that year the"Lionheart" competed in Mexico where he won the WWA tag titles (with El Dandy) as well as the NWA Middleweight title.
From 1994-1996 Jericho continued to compete in Mexico, however he also debuted in Japan where he won the WAR promotion's International Junior Heavyweight singles and tag titles. Chris also planted some roots in the U.S., working for Smoky Mountain Wrestling starting in march of 1994, and eventually Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1996. Jericho's success continued in ECW, where he won the ECW Television Title on June 22, 1996. His impressive list of accolades finally brought him to a world wide stage when he joined WCW in August of 1996.
It was Jericho's stint with WCW that established him as a world class competitor. He was named "Newcomer of the Year" by the readers of WCW magazine, was inducted into the Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame and worked with New Japan Pro Wrestling (His 30th Japanese tour) all in the year of 1997. Jericho also became a world champion, winning the
WCW Cruiserweight Title five times and the Television Title once. He is also credited as being the man that forced Juventud Guerrera to unmask after he beat Guerrera in a mask vs. cruiserweight title match. With his reputation cemented, there was only one logical next step
for Chris to take.
On June 30th, 1999, Chris Jericho signed with the WWF. His subsequent WWF TV debut(on the August 9, edition of Raw) included one of the most spectacular and memorable ring
entrances of all time, as he was revealed to be the man behind the WWF's "Millenium Countdown."
After a mediocre start as a heelish wrestler, Jericho became a fully-fledged face and his career took off. The WWF rolled with the momentum and thrust him into the spotlight. Then on April 18, 2000, Jericho upset Triple H on Raw to win the WWF Championship but the decision was reversed due to a fast count by referee Earl Hebner.
Today, Chris Jericho is one of the glitziest, and most charismatic performers in all of wrestling, as well as one of the most cunning and clever and he ranks as one of the most popular competitors in the WWF.
